First Policy Forum (20-23 June 2001)

The first Forum took place from 20-23 June 2001, in Krakow, Poland. It brought together national delegations of top-ranking public officials and other policy makers, as well as a small number of sophisticated microfinance practitioners from seven NIS countries (Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan). The national delegations worked with technical specialists in financial sector law and regulation and representatives of key donor and multilateral institutions to formulate a concrete agenda for legal and regulatory reform in each of the targeted countries.

The format of the Policy Forum in Krakow combined plenary presentations, concurrent sessions on specific topics important to understanding the existing legal and regulatory environment for microfinance in the NIS, and focused work sessions among participants by national delegation. As a result of the work sessions, each national delegation identified legal and regulatory reforms needed in their respective countries to facilitate the development of microfinance.
